Honoring the Life and Legacy of Barbara  A. and Julius Green

Barbara A. and Julius Green loved Baltimore and were both passionate about the education of their four children. As as result, the importance of education was always a focal point in the Green household.

As her children grew older, Barbara dedicated her life to the improvement of Baltimore City and its residents. Her involvement in local organizations, volunteerism, and commitment to Baltimore led her to public service and working for the Board of Municipal and Zoning Appeals and the City Pension Board.

She championed the rights of women and people of color, but she was especially passionate about educating Baltimore’s children. Because she was such a staunch activist for public education and was serving on the Threshold Inc. Board at the time of her death, we established the Threshold Inc. Barbara A. Green Memorial scholarship in her memory in 2016.

“In politics and public service, activism can make the difference between a good idea and an effective policy,” says University of Baltimore president Kurt Schmoke. “Through this scholarship, we are finding the Barbara Greens of tomorrow—those whose passion is matched by their pragmatism, and whose potential for leadership needs only that spark to come to life. I’m lucky enough to have known the original, and now the University is in a position to encourage others who will follow in her footsteps. It seems to me that this is the very essence of our institution.”

Julius always provided loving support for his wife and her activism, while also having a positive impact on the lives of so many in the East Baltimore community, serving as a role model through his vocation as an insurance salesman. After his death in early 2022 we, appropriately, renamed the scholarship the Threshold, Inc. Barbara A. and Julius Green Memorial Scholarship in memory of two ordinary citizens of Baltimore who made extraordinary contributions to their community.

The scholarship supports deserving University of Baltimore students who have graduated from a Baltimore City high school. Your gift honors Mr. and Mrs. Green while making a positive impact on the Baltimore City youth who will benefit from your generosity.

Gifts to the Threshold, Inc. Barbara A. and Julius Green Scholarship can also be given by check. Please make checks payable to The University of Baltimore Foundation and include a note indicating your gift is for this scholarship. Checks can be mailed to The University of Baltimore, Office of Annual Giving, 1420 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. Questions about the scholarship can be directed to Theresa Silanskis, M.P.A.
